The return of Alice in Borderland may finally be imminent after two long years.

With a revised September 2025 release window, Netflix has confirmed that Alice in Borderland would return to the service in 2025 as part of Next on Netflix 2025. Additionally, they have given us fresh first peeks at the upcoming season and additional information about what to anticipate. Here is all the information we currently know about Alice in Borderland season three.

An image of the series was just uploaded to social media by the streaming service, along with a note that the show will be returning for a third season after a hiatus.

“Alice in Borderland officially returns for a Season 3, coming soon, only on Netflix,” the streamer had the post captioned. In the image, one can see a dystopian city with black clouds and smoke surrounding it.

A few people being present on the terrace of a building also makes it even more intriguing. However, the poster even has an interesting detail, which is a huge hoarding that has a simple picture of a Joker on a card.

Looking at the update being shared on Instagram, many fans came forth sharing their excitement, calling the series their “all-time favorite.”

Cast and Crew Returning

After the viral posters were spotted across Japan, Netflix officially confirmed the series’ renewal on September 28, 2023. We also know that Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya will reprise their roles, and director Shinsuke Sato will return to helm the third season.

Since there isn’t much source material left to adapt, season 3 may introduce significant deviations from the manga. The Joker card shown at the end of season 2 strongly hinted at the character of the Joker, who appears in the manga but has yet to be revealed in the live-action adaptation. The season 3 announcement also included a short teaser focusing on the Joker card.

THE END OF ALICE BOARDERLAND SEASON 2 EXPLAINED

For Arisu and the others, the stakes were higher than ever when the last game got underway. Despite his weariness, Arisu continued to advance with Usagi at his side.

The last game was a croquet match versus Mira, the Queen of Hearts. Nevertheless, Mira devoted the most of her time to attempting to control the two, almost persuading Arisu that the world was a dream. He was fortunately brought back to reality by Usagi, and the two eventually admitted their love for one another.

Arisu finally prevailed after recognising that only refusing to forfeit was sufficient to win, even if Mira won the croquet match. The surviving players were presented with the option to either stay in Borderland or return to the real world after Mira was destroyed by the sky laser after all the face cards had been beaten. Except for Banda and Yaba, everyone decided to go.

When the players woke up, they were at a hospital, where Arisu discovered that Tokyo had been destroyed by a meteor, and that the survivors had been sent to Borderland. Arisu and Usagi were still attracted to one another despite the fact that none of them had any recollection of their time there.

Not all is as it seems, though. With the exception of the Joker card, a table of playing cards gets blown away as the camera moves throughout the hospital grounds.

Season 3’s Story & The Joker Card Mystery

While it took almost a year for Alice in Borderland season 3 to be confirmed, the Netflix show had clearly left the door open for the story to continue. Unlike the manga, which has a very definite ending, Alice in Borderland season 2 ended on a cliffhanger as the camera zoomed in on a Joker card. Considering that there was not a Joker game in the first two seasons, many assumed that this final shot was a sequel hook and that there was at least one more game left to be played.

In Alice in Borderland: Retry, a short story set a few years after the events covered in season 2, Arisu and Usagi are married and expecting a child. Arisu suffers an accident and goes back to the Borderland, although everything is resolved briefly. It’s unlikely that this will be used for season 3.

It’s interesting to note that, although he appears in the Alice in Borderland manga, the Joker only serves as the Borderland ferryman. Put differently, the Joker tease in Alice in Borderland season 2 alludes to a unique plot rather than a scene from the original work. The Joker card’s meaning is similarly unknown. Some people think Arisu will have to return to the Borderland for some reason, while others have theorised that she is not in the actual world at all and will need to defeat the Joker game. Furthermore, it’s not clear if the Joker is responsible for the Borderland.

Season 3 of Alice in Borderland must have been inevitable given its success on Netflix.
Alice in Borderland Season 2: Success & Viewership Data

Despite having already covered the entire original material, the most straightforward explanation for Alice in Borderland’s third season is that the program was a tremendous hit on Netflix. With 61.2 million viewing hours in its first weekend, Alice in Borderland season two debuted at the top of Netflix’s worldwide charts for non-English TV series. During the opening weekend, the second season was at the top of nine countries’ charts and made it into 90 countries’ Top 10. As a result, it became the most popular live-action Japanese series on Netflix. Although the whole viewing statistics is available here, the weekly top 10 performance is broken out as follows:

The debut of season 2 also resulted in a notable increase in the number of viewers for the first season, with an additional 48.88 million hours viewed between December 18 and January 1.

It must also be noted that Netflix’s Alice in Borderland had already made some big changes to the source material, including but not limited to Chishiya’s personality and the addition of original games. Therefore, the live-action series has built its own identity and is now in a good position to continue past the manga. What season 3’s story will be remains to be seen, but hopefully, Alice in Borderland will bring back all the aspects that have made the show so successful so far.

When Will Alice In Borderland Season 3 Release?

In November 2024, Season 3 of Alice In Borderland was officially confirmed for a 2025 release (per What’s On Netflix). However, there has been no indication of when exactly the series will return to Netflix this year.

Fans may be able to predict around when the series may see the light of day, by looking at the production pipeline of past seasons and using that as a potential precedent-setter going forward.

Season 2 wrapped filming in March 2022 before arriving on Netflix on December 22, 2022, about nine months later. If Season 3 production finished sometime in late 2024, assuming it was not announced publicly, there is a chance it could arrive on Netflix in mid-2025.

However, production could be ongoing and might not wrap until a few months from now. Should that be the case, Season 3 could follow a similar schedule as fans saw for Season 2, meaning it would not debut on Netflix until the tail end of 2025.

Also of note is that Season 1 debuted in December 2020, marking two straight December premiere dates. If that trend were to continue, viewers should expect Season 3 to do the same thing with new episodes coming to Netflix in
